The 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry is a friendly, family oriented organization with a mission to preserve the memories of the soldiers and civilians that lived during the Civil War.
We are always ready to welcome new members interested in reenacting, and will help you every step of the way to enjoying a great pass time.
There are whole families, parts of families, and individuals who make up the 97th's membership; portraying a mix of military and civilian Civil War reenactment roles. While our common interest is 19th century history and preserving the memory of the participants of the Civil War, we do it with a sense of fun and camaraderie.
The 97th PVI reenactment group was formed in 1996 and is a member unit of the 2nd Regiment Vincent's Brigade. The unit is headquartered in Chester County Pa., which was the home of the original 97th PVI, but we have many members who live in the surrounding areas of Chester Co. such as Montgomery Co., Delaware Co., Bucks Co., the Harrisburg area, and the states of Maryland and Delaware.
Our members come from a wide range of backgrounds and professions: students, clerks, business persons, teachers, healthcare workers, government workers, housewives, mechanics, and retired persons.
We participate in reenactments mostly in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, with a good mix of local events and those that maybe a few hours drive. Not being able to attend an event due to a lack of transportation rarely occurs for any member as there is always someone who will gladly share a ride. The 97th also provides school and community programs, and participates in a number of parades each year in the Chester County area.
Members are not required or pressured to attend a set number of events, you come to those events that you wish to attend.
There are loaner uniforms, equipment, and tents for those that want to get their feet wet with out a large initial cash investment. Our members are always eager to answer any questions and provide new members with information and suggestions.
We are dedicated to the idea that the individual is the key to the success of the unit. Everyone has an equal chance to make the unit great. The 97th also sponsors a Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew that is an integral part of our youth program.
If you have an interest in Civil War history and reenacting, we certainly would like to hear from you. Contact Dennis Wales (dwales113@aol.com) , the captain of our unit, and he will gladly provide more information and answer any questions about our unit and getting started in Civil War reenacting.
