A biography of "Mother" St.John, as she was known to the men of the 97thPVI, who joined the regiment as a laundress to be near her two youngest sons who had enlisted into the 97th in 1861. She accompanied the regiment for three years, caring for the men, including the sick of the 97th.

The United States Sanitary Commission was organized in April 1861 to  unite the various organizations aiding Union soldiers. "Sanitary Fairs" where held to raise money for the Sanitary Commission, and this booklet describes the role Chester County women took in the Philadelphia Fair of 1864, and the goods collected and created by them for the fair.
